members of the class of '02 were forced by Director Barton Cruikshank to pay 72 cents each to
replace the clapper in the bell hanging in the Normal School, across Main Street from Old
Main.
That was the first time the clapper had been stolen by Tech boys, but certainly not the last, for
the intense competition and rivalry between the two schools often resulted in the disappearance
of that tempting bell clapper. It has been rumored that if the lawn in front of Old Main were dug
up, all the missing clappers would be unearthed; no one ever checked. At that time, a crude
shower had been installed in the back part of the locker room in Old Main, but its control valves
were just inside the locker room door. One bitter sub-zero day as a much-disliked professor was
enjoying a warm shower, one of the students reached inside the locker room, turned off the
hot water, and then continued up the stairway. The professor's howls could be heard in the next
building.
Special Courses
. Because Manual Training was introduced into the public school curriculum
in so many cities, and the ordinary teacher was unable to take the responsibility for these
courses, Clarkson introduced for students at the Normal School in town some special classes for
the training of teachers. Included in them were minor courses for those who did not intend to
become teachers, but who desired a practical knowledge of the subjects. Three such courses
were offered: Maid's Work, Schoolgirl's Class, and Housekeeper's Class.
The two courses in Maid's Work involved 15 lessons and covered the
following:
FIRST COURSE

Sauces for meats, fish, and desserts
