ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Bradford B. Broughton, professor of technical communications, retired in 1995 after
teaching at Clarkson for 40 years. Joining the Department of Liberal Studies in 1955 from
graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania, Broughton climbed the academic ranks to
professor in 1966. A graduate of Allegheny College, he received his master's degree and PhD
from the University of Pennsylvania. He taught at the University of Pennsylvania and at Utica
College of Syracuse University before joining the Clarkson faculty.
He is the author of five other books. In 1966, he published two works on medieval
literature and history:
The Legends of Richard I, Coeur de Lion
, and
Richard the Lion Hearted
and Other Medieval English Romances
. Then, in 1970, he edited and contributed to
Twenty
Seven to One
, a collection of articles, poems, essays, and remembrances contributed by 27
members of the liberal studies faculty over the years in honor of Dr. Donald Stillman's
retirement as chairman of liberal studies. In 1986 he published the first volume of his two-
volume
Dictionary of Medieval Knighthood and Chivalry
; the second volume appeared in 1988.
He served for 2 1/2 years in the US Navy during the second World War, participating in
the battle of Okinawa and the first occupation of Japan; he also served for two additional years
on active duty in the Navy during the Korean War, 1950-52.
Among other honors, he was cited in
Who's Who in the World
in 1993 and 1995. He
received Clarkson's Distinguished Teaching Award in 1972, and at the alumni reunion in 1995,
he was made an honorary alumnus of the University.
He and his wife of 45 years, June Barnum, are the parents of two children, Megan
Blumbergs of Ballston Lake, N.Y., and Thaddeus of New Hartford, N.Y. The Broughtons
currently reside in Potsdam.
