Alpha Phi Omega.
Clarkson's Mu Omicron chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, the national service
fraternity, was installed in Lewis House on October 12. The ceremony was presided over by six
members of the Mu Beta chapter from Colgate University; the national president, William S.
Roth, flew in from Raleigh, N.C., to preside over the installation.
Ugly Man Contest.
As one of its first functions on campus in the fall, Alpha Phi Omega
arranged for the first Ugly Man Contest to raise money. Organizations on campus sponsored a
contestant with the accompanying publicity and stunts of the campaign left to the imagination
and ingenuity of the sponsoring organizations.
Voting was held at the end of the campaign when the public cast its votes by making
donations to charities identified on the various ballot jars of the contestants. Each penny
counted as a vote, and the candidate with the most donations was proclaimed the "Ugliest Man
on Campus." "Nauseating Norman" Parks from Alpha Chi Rho was the winner, having received
$186.66 in votes.
The contest raised a total of $514.63; it was divided among the American Red Cross,
$100; American Cancer Society, $100; American Heart Association, $100; and Potsdam
Rescue Squad, $50. The rest went to other charities soliciting on campus. Donated by Harold's
Men's Shop, a trophy with the winner's name on it was hung in Lewis House.
Alpha Kappa Psi.
February 8 saw the installation on campus of Alpha Kappa Psi, national
business fraternity. A national fraternity emphasizing professional activities, it also held social
functions throughout the year. Its objectives were to further the individual benefits of the
members; to foster scientific research in the fields of commerce, accounting, and finance; and to
promote and advance courses leading to degrees in business administration at institutions of
higher learning.
Fraternity Houses.
OPiO, Clarkson's first fraternity, moved from its home on Market Street,
the current VFW Building, into its new home at 14 Leroy in September. That home had been
the Sisson family home for years. Theta Xi, one of Clarkson's newer fraternities, moved into its
new home on the corner of Chestnut and Lawrence Avenue.
