first winning season since 1962. At one point, the team had a 13-5 record, but fell into a slump
as they entered the stretch and lost five in a row.
One of the high points of the season was capturing the Queen's Invitational Basketball
Tournament in Kingston, Ontario. Chafin's charges dumped host Queen's University 104-68,
and then rolled over the Royal Military College 95-42 in the championship game.
The play of John Gordon was a major factor in this winning season. This 6'3" ECE
major from Lackawanna, N.Y., became the fourth player in Clarkson history to score over
1,000 career points, even while sitting out one season because of an injury! He averaged 17.7
points and 11.8 rebounds per game to lead the team, and was named to the ECAC Honor Roll
on two occasions. He dropped in 30 points and rescued 13 rebounds in an overtime loss to
Potsdam State, and 32 points with 17 rebounds in an 82-79 heartbreaking loss to RPI.
For his outstanding play in wins over Ottawa 92-87, RIT 84-72, and Alfred 85-80,
freshman Dave Whiteside, 6'6", was named ECAC Rookie-of-the-Week. He was honored after
hitting 72 percent of his shots from the floor, and scoring 63 points, picked off 23 rebounds,
and handled nine assists in the three games.
