Golden/Monaco and Minard/Stehle finished first and second (respectively). The fine efforts of
Jan Forbush and Eileen O'Hare also contributed to Clarkson's tournament victory march over
Keuka, Oswego, and William Smith Colleges during the season.
Rubik's Cube Contest.
CUB Recreation Committee, in conjunction with the Rathskeller,
sponsored a Rubik's Cube Contest. Seven categories were announced: Most Original, Best
Cube Related Outfit, Most Illegal, Most Original Cube, Most Determined, Most Frustrated, and
Fastest. Most Illegal was won by Jeff Solomon by cleverly concealing colored tapes on his left
arm and transferring the tape to his cube. The largest competition sought the prize for Fastest.
Again, Jeff Solomon came out on top with a time of 1:03.76 (Yes! In under two minutes).
Second place went to Robert Gardner with 1:32:02. Most Original ended in a tie between
Robert Dixon and Jim Peploski who used only one hand to solve the Cube. Other winners were
George Torretti for Most Original Cube, Mike Nestler for Most Frustrated, and Ted Lemmond
for Most Determined.
Outstanding Woman.
Rose Mary Murtagh, senior marketing major, was chosen to be included
in the 1981 edition of
Outstanding Young Women of America
. This award honored and
encouraged exceptional young women between 21 and 36 who had distinguished themselves in
their homes, their professions, and their communities. Accomplishments such as these were the
result of dedication, service, and leadership- qualities which deserved to be recognized and
remembered.
Basketball Stars.
John Golden and Jamie King, both seniors, were chosen for the All-ICAC
Basketball Team for 1982. Forwards Golden and King combined to average 24.6 points and
19.4 rebounds per game for the Golden Knights who finished the season with a 6-6 record and a
12-12 record overall, tying Alfred or third in the conference. Mike Lewis, also a senior,
received Honorable Mention.
Misiaszek Awarded.
For his advancement and improvement of the engineering profession
through his many years of service as a member of the New York State Society of Professional
Engineers, Edward T. Misiaszek, associate dean of Engineering, received a meritorious service
award.
He also was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the National Council of
Examiners, an organization which prepares uniform tests for candidates seeking registration as
professional engineers and land surveyors.
STRETCH.
In a determined effort to broaden the education of Clarkson students, the Student
Life Office instituted a new program with the acronym of STRETCH, standing for Skills That
Reap Enrichment Through Challenging Horizons. This new program was intended to encourage
all new (freshman) students to acquire knowledge and awareness in areas that would lead them
to be more rounded and self-confident in their professional lives. Five areas were targeted for
development through this program: Human Relations Skills, Communication Skills, Erudition,
Physical Fitness, and Professionalism.
This idea emerged from the Mentorship Program of the previous year that involved 150
volunteers, of which 75 acted as a control group. These students discussed with Professors Vic
Pease, psychology; Bill Bradley, civil engineering; and Gary Kelly, support services, their goals
