included the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Association
of University Professors, the American Association for Higher Education, the American
Mathematical Association, and the American Council on Education.
He resigned from Clarkson's presidency in 1987. (See 1987)
Biology Chair.
Arthur E. ("Pete") Linkins was the first faculty member to be awarded the
Bayard and Virginia Clarkson Endowed Chair in Biology. Later he became chairman of
biology, chairman of biology and psychology, dean of science, and finally vice president for
academic affairs before resigning in 1994 to become president of Paul Smith's College.
20,000th Graduate.
At the Commencement exercises in May, Anita O'Brien, majoring in
Industrial Distribution, became Clarkson's 20,000th graduate.
Tuition Increase.
For freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, tuition for 1985-1986 academic year
was $8,300; seniors was $7,900 because they did not participate in the personal computer
program. The average room charge was $1,749; board rates were set at $1,990 for the 19-meal
plan and $1,957 for the 14-meal plan; Health and Recreation and Student Activities fees
remained at $100 each. Adding the costs of books, transportation, and personal expenses, the
total charge for attending the University for fall 1985 was well over $13,000.
Ski Team Victories.
Opening its season at the Syracuse Invitational Tournament in January,
Clarkson's Nordic and Alpine teams dominated their respective competitors with a solid victory
over 14 other schools. Their first-place finish was quite a surprise to the favored West Point
team, which at the onset of the season was ranked in the top 10 in the National Collegiate Ski
Association.
Consisting of a 17-kilometer race followed by a three-man relay race, each leg being 5.3
kilometers, the Nordic competition was won by freshman Pete Giancola from Rutland, Vt., with
a time of 1:06.31. Seniors Greg Mapstone and Chuck Hull both finished in the top 10 to add
more points to Clarkson's total. This relay race immediately followed the individual race and
gave the skiers little time to recover. Fielding three skiers who just finished the individual race,
Clarkson's team took first place by better than a two-minute margin.
The Alpine skiers paralleled the performance of the Nordic squad by winning their
competition. Junior John Ahlman put two sizzling slalom runs back to back to capture second
place. Freshman Scott Richardson and sophomore Bill Stevens scored valuable points for the
team in the slalom. The Giant Slalom was Clarkson's event. Dave Darby's polished style
brought him a first-place finish, followed by Scott Richardson's second place.
Later, the Knights finished second at a split invitational in January as the Alpine team
placed second out of 16 teams in the Alfred tournament, and in second place out of five teams
in the US Military Academy Invitational at Lake Placid. The Alpine team later took second-
place honors at the Ithaca Invitational, and was ranked second in the state going into the 32-
team Division II tournament.
The Mideast Collegiate Championships for the Nordic Division in February were held
for the first time at Clarkson Seven Springs, the first intercollegiate cross-country ski race ever
held there. Clarkson was edged by a team from the US Military Academy 13-17. In the
individual event, Chuck Hull finished second with a time of 50:51; Greg Mapstone finished
fifth, and Jeff Eberhardt finished eleventh.
