Unfortunately, Colgate defeated the Golden Knights in the semi-final game 5-2 in the
Boston Garden.
Senior Week.
The Senior Week events established a diverse weekend for seniors storing
memories of their last few days as undergraduates. These began with a Volleyball/Softball
Round Robin tournament on the lawn in front of the PIT on Sunday, May 13. Monday's event
called for Seniors' Brunch at Maxfields followed by "90 Minutes Downtown" in the various
participating bars.
Tuesday called for a Bluesfest with a barbecue on Hantz Field from 1 to 5 p.m.
Wednesday was the traditional Thousand Islands Cruise out of Alexandria Bay. On Thursday,
the seniors returned to Hantz Field for Surf and Turf from 1 to 5 p.m. while listening to Jamie
Nostredame's band. Friday was Comedy Night in Snell Hall Auditorium with the Boston
Comedy Company. Saturday ended the week with the Senior Ball in the Walker Arena from 9
to 1.
Spring Musical.
The Clarkson Theater's spring performance was an ambitious production of
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat,
the uptempo musical about Biblical Jacob
and his 12 sons. With a text written by Tim Rice and a score by Andrew Lloyd Webber, this
production challenged the energies of the Theater Group to the limit.
With Kim Aumell as narrator and Darrick Christopher as Jacob, the story followed
Joseph's adventures after his father, Jacob, to cheer him up, gave him a colorful coat (made
apparently out of every color anyone could think of, if the lyrics of the song were to be
believed). Jason Coughlin's portrayal of Joseph was highly praised for its lifelike
characterization. Highlighting the production were many dance numbers choreographed by
Carrie Mallery using group numbers which relied on synchronized movement.
Conducted by Carl Ferrera of the Crane School of Music, the orchestra served as the full
necessary background, often relying on "modern" music of the sounds of keyboards, piano,
guitar, bass, drums, and percussion.
Gallagher's Award.
The American Society for Engineering Education selected President
Gallagher as the 1990 recipient of the prestigious Benjamin Garver Lamme Award, the highest
honor given by the Society. Presented at the ASEE's Annual Conference on June 26 in Toronto,
Ontario, it honored his 40 years of accomplishments since receiving his bachelor's degree in
1950.
He was cited for his contributions as a researcher, educator, and administrator in
addition to his contributions to the early development of the finite element theory and its
practical application.
Computer Chronicles.
Early in April, Clarkson was featured on
Computer Chronicles
. This
weekly television program featured the many ways that
computers are utilized on the Clarkson
campus and their impact on the academic
and student life. Clarkson was selected because it was
the first college to provide entering freshmen with a personal computer.
Film crews from
Computer Chronicles
had come to Potsdam in January to see just how
the approximately 4,000 personal computers were being used at the University. They found
courses designed around professors "homegrown" software, software vending machines where
students freely copied 1,000 programs, computer models designed to track the paths of oil
