CE Videos.
The ongoing construction of the Center for Advanced Materials Processing
(CAMP) building provided the civil engineering department with a wealth of real-world
learning opportunities. In a series of videotapes produced by the department, civil engineering
students could watch their classroom design work applied to real-world construction.
Gordon Batson, CE professor, who teaches concrete design, stated that these tapes were
used at the beginning of his course so that students could visualize the process firsthand. He
directed CE student Brett Mancini in filming this series with technical assistance from Dan
Dullea and the Media Technologies department of the ERC. Mancini and Batson then edited the
footage into short segments, with Mancini doing voice-over commentary. Other segments were
shot by Director of New Construction Richard Parsons, and Tom Seager '87, a consultant to the
construction office.
Lady Knights Basketball.
Ending their league play with a record of 10-2 in the ICAC, the
Clarkson Women's Basketball team traveled for the sixth year to compete at the ECAC
Tournament held at the William Smith College in Geneva. Seeded fourth, the team lost to
Cortland 45-38, seeded first, on March 2. Their overall record for the season was 17-9, heading
into the tournament.
To earn this trip, the women had defeated RPI in their final ICAC season play 76-55.
Anne Stulhman was the high scorer with 26 points.
Bridge-building Contest.
Six civil engineering students spent several months designing and
practicing for the American Society of Civil Engineering Bridge Building Contest held in
Walker Arena on April 20. This contest was the highlight of a regional conference of the ASCE
student chapter in April.
Sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction and the New York State
Steel Fabricators Association, the contest included six other colleges. Clarkson's team of Eric
Heflin, Scott McConnel, Sam Calandra, Mike Papa, Todd Fliegel, and Vince Mazzone placed
second overall, but logged the fastest construction time, the lightest frame, and the most cost-
effective design.
Cheel Campus Center.
Saturday, October 19, marked the opening of the Cheel Campus
Center. Members of the Trustees, staff, faculty, and donors were on hand for the occasion.
Following a special dinner, Clarkson President Richard Gallagher spoke at the dedication
ceremony. Calling this new addition to the campus "a place for contemplation and relaxation,"
the president noted that this opening marked a milestone on a pilgrimage begun 70 years
earlier: the goal of establishing a campus on the hill. Noting the outstanding contribution of
Bert and Sara Merrick Snell's daughter, Helen Snell Cheel, the president unveiled a bronze
plaque noting the Snell contributions to this structure.
Other festivities included a skating exhibition by members of the Potsdam Figure
Skating Club, and the annual Green and Gold game, the Golden Knights hockey team's first full
scrimmage of the 1991-92 season. During the intermission of that game, a "Trustees on Ice"
contest pitted two teams of Clarkson Trustees against each other in "Stack-a-Puck" and "Slap-
