New Sports Conference.
Clarkson joined a new sports conference in 1995, the Upstate
Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA), a Division III (small college) grouping by the NCAA
standards. Joining Clarkson in this new grouping were Hamilton, St. Lawrence, Hobart/William
Smith, RPI, Rochester, Skidmore, and Union. It sponsors league competition for men and
women in soccer, basketball, and lacrosse, as well as football and basketball for men, and field
hockey for women. Single-site championship events will be provided for men's golf, women's
volleyball and cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, and swimming and tennis for
both men and women.
Clarkson remained in Division I for hockey.
Journal Editors.
Two professors of civil and environmental engineering were named as editors
of professional journals published by the American Society of Civil Engineers: John Dempsey
was named editor of the
Journal of Cold Region Engineering,
and Thomas Theis as editor of
the
Journal of Environmental Engineering
.
Department chairman Anthony Collins stated:
It is a statement to the profession at-large that Clarkson is at the forefront of these areas, and that our
faculty are prepared to serve the public.
Woman Scientist Honored.
Liya Regel, Clarkson University Research Professor and Director
of the International Center for Gravity Materials Science and Applications, became the first
woman member of the Basic Science Section of the International Academy of Astronautics
(IAA). She received this honor for her work in the basic sciences which consist of testing the
effects of low and high gravity on materials processing.
Approximately 60 countries are represented in the IAA, which brings together the most
prestigious space scientists and decision makers in the world in forums, symposia, awards, and
publications to provide policy makers with scientific and technical information for future
developments in space.
MBA Internationality.
Five Clarkson MBA (Master of Business Administration) students
participated in the Concordia International MBA Case Competition in January. Clarkson's team
was made up of Brett Kiah, Susan Briggs, Crista Fahrenkrug, Jonathan Greene, and John
Rogers. Coached by management professor Gary Throop, this team competed against 29 teams
representing some of the best business schools in the United States, Canada, Europe, and New
Zealand.
This competition is a forum in which student teams compete in the analysis and
presentation of business case studies. Teams were given three hours to study and master a
complex case involving a real company, and then to present their analysis and
recommendations to a panel of judges acting as the company's board of directors. These judges
are over 250 executives from the business community, who critique and evaluate the
presentations using real-world criteria.
Broughton Retired.
By being awarded "professor emeritus status" at Commencement on May
14, Bradford B. Broughton, professor of technical communications, ended his 40-year career at
Clarkson. With his AB degree from Allegheny College, and his MA and PhD from the
University of Pennsylvania, he was hired as an instructor of liberal studies in 1955. He rose
through the ranks to become assistant professor in 1957, associate professor in 1961, and full
