engineering science as being of the high level of quality the State requires. Many criteria were
used: student/faculty ratio, institutional commitment of resources, computer facilities and
services, each program's unique contribution to the field, and the faculty's academic preparation
and background experience. Other factors included cooperation with other universities and
student financial support.
1,000th Hockey Win.
When the Golden Knights defeated Yale 9-1 at Cheel Arena on
November 19 on Todd White's game-winning goal, they earned the 1,000
th
hockey victory for
the school: 1,000-494-67. And they did it in record time, for no other school has registered
1,000 wins in only 1,561 games over 74 years. With that victory, Clarkson joined Boston
College, Boston University, Harvard, Michigan, and Minnesota in the 1,000 victory club.
In the Yale game, the Golden Knights scored on a power play, when they were short-
handed, and at even strength. They scored on controversial shots and on deflections off
opposing players. Nine different Clarkson players found the net. On the previous night, the
team had demolished Princeton 11-2, thus scoring 20 goals over the weekend. They hadn't
scored as many goals in consecutive games in 11 years.
This game became one of six memorable victories for the team. Five other
unforgettable games were:
February 11, 1942.
Gene LaBonne scored 13 goals in a game against Norwich as
Clarkson defeated the Vermont team 29-3. That game set scoring marks for both
individual and team goals in a game which still stands.
February 12, 1955.
Tom Meeker scored three goals in 15 seconds against Hamilton in
Walker Arena. Meeker connected at 19:18, 19:28 and 19:33 of the first period of a game
which saw Clarkson win 18-2.
March 17, 1966.
John McLennan led the Golden Knights to the NCAA final, scoring
the game-winning goal with 4:06 left to upset tournament favorite Denver. McLennan
assisted on three other goals, and future Olympian Tom Hurley added two goals.
Clarkson also reached the NCAA finals in 1962 and 1970.
March 16, 1991
. In the last game in Walker Arena, the Golden Knights defeated
Wisconsin 5-4 to advance from the NCAA Tournament's first round to the quarterfinals.
Mark Green scored the winning goal with just over three minutes left
March 24, 1991.
Clarkson eliminated the NCAA Tournament's top-seeded team, Lake
Superior State, with a 4-3 victory, and advanced to the NCAA semifinals for the first
time in 21 years. They accomplished this feat at Lake Superior State.
Basketball Whizzes.
Stephanie Sealer, Clarkson basketball whiz, scored 21 points against
Utica College in November, and by so doing, passed the 1,000-point mark for her career as the
Golden Knights routed Utica 62-20. Clarkson had led by 12 points at the half, then outscored
Utica 31-2 in the second half. She became the top shooter from the foul line in 1993-94 season,
scoring on 90.9% of her shots from the free-throw line; she also sank a school-record of 24
straight foul shots. She ranked third on Clarkson's all-time scoring list with 952 points in 73
career games, and was named to the EAA second team basketball all-stars for scoring 12.7
points per game.
Kim Brown '94 finished her Clarkson career ranking 13th on the all-time scoring list
with 516 points; she was Clarkson's second all-time leading rebounder with 621 boards in 100
games. The team posted a 12-12 overall record for the season.
