1919
The Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution was ratified prohibiting liquor traffic. The
American Legion was formed in Paris. In June, the Treaty of Versailles was signed in Paris
(although the US Senate failed to ratify it in November). On tour to drum up support for the
treaty in September, President Wilson suffered a stroke. Later, he would be awarded the Nobel
Peace Prize for his efforts. Jack Dempsey defeated Jess Willard in the third round for the
heavyweight championship. In England, Rutherford discovered the proton and advanced his
theory of atom smashing. The Pennsylvania, the world's biggest hotel with 2,200 rooms, opened
on New York's Seventh Avenue. D.W. Griffith, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and Charlie
Chaplin formed their own motion picture company, United Artists. Howard Wilcox won the
Indianapolis 500 at 88.1 mph in a Peugeot racer. Sir Barton became the first Triple Crown
winner in horse racing since the series was begun in 1875. Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg,
Ohio, and H.L. Mencken's The American Language were published.

Campus Events.
Construction was finished on the new building for Potsdam Normal School,
the building which would become Clarkson's Snell Hall in the 1950s.
Commencement Activities.
After the tight Commencement schedule during the wartime
Commencement of 1918, a new order of activities was agreed on for the 1919 celebration. A
Senior Ball was held on Friday night in the gym. Then President and Mrs. Brooks held a
reception for seniors and their families on Saturday evening. The baccalaureate service was
held at 1:30 a.m. on Sunday in Trinity Church, and Commencement on Monday at 11 o'clock in
the Clarkson Assembly Hall, followed at noon by the Alumni Dinner with 47 alumni and
faculty present.
The
Integrator
.
Supported at first entirely by subscription, Clarkson's student newspaper
appeared. In addition to describing campus activities, it was intended to communicate to the
alumni. Its first issue contained news of the alumni by classes. Its founders were Perry Hadlock
'21, Francis Burke '21, and Alan Schwind '20; Dr. Carl Michel served as its advisor. It was not
named until early in 1920 after a contest was held to choose a name.
Lambda Iota.
On October 23, 1919, 30 non-fraternity men formed the Lambda Iota fraternity
to reap the benefits of fraternal principles; it became Clarkson's third fraternity. This group
chose Delos Crumb '20, as president; Herbert Wood, as vice president; Neil Campbell '20, as
