Potsdam High School in March to give the local students an opportunity to practice their French
on "real" French-speaking people.
Schuler Bequest.
A bequest exceeding $20 million was received by Clarkson from the estate of
the late potato chip magnate, Andrew M. Schuler, Star Lake, N.Y., making it the largest
bequest ever received by the University.
Mr. Schuler began his association with the University in the 1970s, received an
honorary degree in 1978, and served as a Trustee from 1978 until he was named Trustee
Emeritus in 1983. Two campus buildings carry the Schuler family name: the Andrew M.
Schuler Indoor Recreation Building bears his name, and the Andrew S. Schuler Educational
Resources Center bears the name of his father.
Schuler's family began a baking company a century ago, and branched out into the
pretzel business in 1909. In 1930, Andrew M. joined the firm when the Schuler Potato Chip
Company was formed, becoming president in 1948. That company merged with Sunshine
Biscuit Company in 1957.
Hockey at Cheel.
The Golden Knights posted a 13-2 record in the new Cheel Arena in the
1991-92 hockey season en route to a 22-10-1 overall record. Led by Captain Scott Thomas and
co-captains Jeff Torrey and Hugo Belanger, the team also advanced to the ECAC playoffs,
before losing to Cornell 4-2 in double overtime in the semifinals. The team lost its chance to
participate in the national NCAA title by losing to defending national champion Northern
Michigan 8-4 in the West Regionals at Joe Louis Stadium in Detroit.
"Rape 101."
In its efforts to promote student awareness about rape and sexual assaults, Dean
Mike Cooper's office held mandatory education sessions for students returning to campus in the
fall. Held on Friday before classes began on Monday, these sessions, through videos and
lectures, dealt with topics like sexual assault. A second session was scheduled for the first week
of classes.
Dean Cooper felt it was particularly important to inform freshmen (considered the most
vulnerable group) about the dangers they could face now that they were away from home. To
emphasize the point, posters were displayed across campus containing only two words: "Rape
101." According to the Rape Treatment Center at the Santa Monica Hospital, which publishes
the posters, one out of six college women would be the victim of a rape or attempted rape.
These sessions were held in addition to the physical education course called "Personal
Wellness" required of every freshman. Topics of this course include Alcohol and Drugs,
Communication Skills, Stress Management, Physical Conditioning, Nutrition, and Sexuality.
Hockey Telecast.
On Friday, February 7, two NCAA Division I hockey powers, Clarkson and
Cornell, competed at Cheel Arena in a game telecast by satellite to 29 locations around the
country, from Boston to San Francisco. Through the efforts of the alumni associations of both
universities, this game was sent live to thousands of alumni.
For many Clarkson alumni, this provided a view of the new Cheel Center. This fourth
annual telecast of Golden Knight hockey featured a walking tour of the Cheel Center, a
welcome by President Gallagher during the pre-game show, and an interview with Ellsworth
Vines '65, president of the Alumni Association. Clarkson defeated the Big Red of Cornell 3-1.
