group was to imagine that they worked for a particular firm that had been asked to handle the
problem. Therefore, more than just the engineering aspects had to be considered.
For example, in the problem of the water containment, the group had to include such
other elements as cost, the design and location of the tank, the section of town involved, the
social consequences of erecting a tower for the tank, etc. By including professional outsiders in
the audience (the sort of audience to which these students will be making similar presentations
on their jobs) Prof. Collins forced the students to consider not just engineering and financial
aspects, but the whole problem, including ethical and social consequences. As a result, students
learned that solutions to problems involved far more than just engineering or finances.
Soccer Champs.
With a 13-4-2 overall season record, Clarkson's men's soccer team captured
its first league title in the sport's 41-year history at Clarkson. Picked by the other coaches in the
league to finish fifth at best out of the seven teams in the league, the Golden Knights surprised
the world by racing out to a 6-0 league start of the season, and capturing the 1993 league
halfway through the campaign. That led them to the NCAA Division III Tournament where
they defeated the nation's fourth-, sixth-, and 12th-ranked teams to enter the semifinals against
Williams College in Massachusetts.
After losing to Le Moyne in the opening game of the regular season, the Knights battled
their way to an unbeaten streak of 12, including a record streak of 10 wins. Highlighting that
stretch of wins was a 2-0 defeat of SLU on October 1 which secured the EAA Championship
for the team. Leading scorer Mike Kirmse '94 scored both goals. Clarkson went on to defeat
two-time champion Rowan College (N.J.) 1-0 on Snell Field in mid-November on Kirmse's
goal. They lost to Williams 3-1 in the finals a week later.
Kirmse later was selected for the All-American and All-New York State First Team.
Coach Willi Steinrotter was named the EAA Coach of the Year and the NCAA Regional Coach
of the Year.
Gallagher in Hall of Fame.
In June, Richard Gallagher, Clarkson's president, was elected into
the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) Hall of Fame. Only 22 others have
been inducted. Joining 18 new inductees, Gallagher was honored for "his lasting impact on
engineering and engineering technology education."
Additionally, Gallagher was selected to receive the ASEE Centennial Medallion which
recognizes "individuals who have had a significant and lasting impact on engineering education
or engineering technology education." He was chosen to receive this medallion from educators
nominated by ASEE committees, deans of engineering, and deans of engineering technology. In
addition, he was selected as a Fellow Member of the ASEE in recognition of his outstanding
services to the organization. He received all three honors at the ASEE 100th annual conference
at the University of Illinois on June 20-23. He previously received the highest honor in ASEE
in 1990 when he was awarded the Benjamin Garver Lamme Award.
Lacrosse All-Stars.
Earning first-team 1993 EAA recognition for their efforts in spurring the
Golden Knights lacrosse team to a second-place finish in the Empire Athletic Association were
senior midfielder John Anderson and junior defenseman Shawn Stewart.
In addition, head coach Bill Bergan was selected EAA Coach of the Year for leading his
team to a 5-1 league record, a 7-3 final regular season record, and a tenth-place national ranking
in Division III.
