though they ended their season at the ECAC Upstate Tournament with a loss, their season had
proved to be their best season ever at 16-7.
Peer Counseling.
Because date rape is not uncommon on college campuses, but only 30
percent ever were reported, Clarkson's Student Development Center felt it was essential for the
school to provide somewhere for victims to go, and someone to turn to 24 hours a day. In
conjunction with the Center and in cooperation with Citizens Against Violent Action, a new
Peer Counseling Group was established to help rape and sexual assault victims. This group was
set up to help rape victims with counseling, legal references, and support.
Established on the basis that a rape is not a sexual act but an act of violence that
happens in all socio-economic facets of American society, this Peer Group of students was
given special training to help fellow students who have had an experience with sexual assault or
related event. It was based on the assumption that a victim could talk more easily with a person
near to his or her own age.
APICS.
A new society to provide identity for Industrial Management students was formed on
campus in February: The American Production Inventory Control Society. Seventeen students
became members of this new society in the induction ceremony conducted by five members of
the Thousand Islands chapter from Watertown, who sponsored the Clarkson chapter. Bob
DeLaCruz was elected its president and Kevin Grosky its vice president; Dean Kaczka,
Professors Frazer, Bommer, and Sandbothe also were members.
This society was opened to all students who were interested in manufacturing,
production, inventory control, and related industrial manufacturing operations. It was brought
to campus because the resurgent interest in Industrial Management on campus had led faculty
to reinstate the dormant Industrial Management program as a major in the School of
Management.
Off-campus Housing
. With a smaller than usual freshman class expected in fall 1986,
Clarkson tightened its off-campus permissions policy. This impacted University housing
regulations which stipulated that dorms had to be kept approximately 95 percent capacity.
Sophomores were required to live on campus unless they were married or were moving into a
fraternity house. Dropouts between semesters made the pressure even greater to keep the dorms
full, so exceptions were cancelled, much to the displeasure of many students.
Basketball Woes.
Hoping to end its season-long losing streak, Coach Murphy's basketball team
lost a heartbreaking decision to Plattsburgh State in triple overtime 88-87. Then they lost to
Union, and after blowing a 45-41 halftime lead over RPI, they lost another heartbreaker to the
Engineers 82-81, and followed that with a loss to Hamilton. Their loss streak reached 24 when
they lost to RPI again in the final game of the season, creating the dismal record of 0-24,
despite some fine play by individual team members.
Hockey.
Despite a fifth-place finish in the ECAC standings, which cost Clarkson the home-ice
advantage they sought, the Golden Knights played what was arguably their best game of the
season by defeating number one seed Harvard 5-4. They went on to defeat defending NCAA
National Champion RPI 3-1 on Friday night and again on Saturday 6-4. Goalie Jamie Falle
played the best six periods of his career, making 32 saves on Friday and 27 on Saturday to stifle
