At the inauguration ceremony itself on Saturday, October 15, a musical prelude
performed by the 10th Mountain Division Band was followed by the academic procession that
included faculty, College delegates, deans, Trustees, officers, and student representatives.
Speakers included R. Thomas Williamson, executive vice president of the University; Potsdam
mayor, Paul Claffey '43; Jon Strauss, president of Worcester Polytechnic Institute; Faculty
Senate Chairman Bradford Broughton; Dr. Donald N. Zweip, former ASME president; and
David J. Decker '72, president of the Clarkson Alumni Association.
Research Dean.
Professor Rangaswamy Mukundan, electrical and computing engineering
department, was appointed dean of the Graduate School and director of Research.
Soccer.
By defeating the state's 10th ranked team, Union, in the last game of the regular season
3-0, their sixth win in a row, the Golden Knight soccer team raised their record to 14-1-1,
breaking the old school record of wins by two. Scoring all their goals in the first period, the
team was turned on by freshman Larry Martin's two-goal performance which raised his season
total to 13.
Ranked second in the state, Clarkson hosted Alfred at Snell Field for the semifinals of
the New York State regional. Tied 1-1 at the end of the game, the teams played two overtime
periods without score. Even though the Golden Knights lost in the subsequent shootout 4-2, the
game officially is recorded as a tie, making the final overall record 14-1-2, the best in
Clarkson's history.
Loafing for Hunger.
Over 100 students "loafed" for hunger for an entire Saturday evening and
most of Sunday morning in March as the members of Sigma Chi fraternity and Delta Zeta
sorority baked over 100 loaves of bread in their second annual "Loafing for Hunger" project.
The students undertook this project to help relieve hunger in the area.
Along with members of the faculty and administration, the students baked bread all
night long in the University kitchens, then distributed the loaves to seven Potsdam-area
churches. There, those in need merely helped themselves; others bought the loaves or simply
contributed to the project. The fraternity and sorority donated the profits to the churches who
distributed the money to help the needy.
Graham Won Barben Award.
H. Allan Graham '59 won the Arnold H. Barben Award
presented annually to the Varsity C hockey alumnus who has demonstrated outstanding
personal achievement, has contributed to the betterment of his community, and has worked
unselfishly for his alma mater. This award was established in 1981 by Helen Barben in memory
of her late husband, Arnold Barben '27, to recognize the important role that hockey has played
in the history of Clarkson.
BS in Computer Engineering.
New York State authorized Clarkson to award the new degree
of bachelor of science in computer engineering: the study of how computer systems are
designed. Its first majors would graduate in 1990.
