the potent RPI offense. Mike Morrison and Bruce Tillotson were the offensive heroes for the
Knights.
These victories in the best of three series earned the Knights a berth in the ECAC
Championship Tournament for the third consecutive year. In Boston they opened the 25th
ECAC Championship at the Boston Garden against Harvard, whom they had upset to end their
regular season. There, they defeated Harvard again, but were upset by Cornell, and though
second in the ECAC championship, were not chosen to represent the ECAC in the NCAA
national championships.
Delta Zeta.
One of the largest national sororities in the United States with over 160 chapters,
Delta Zeta came to Clarkson in 1986, joining with Phi Sigma Sigma and Phi Mu to become
Clarkson's third sorority.
Ski Team Third.
At the National Collegiate Ski meet in Killington, Vermont, between
February 26 and March 1, Clarkson's skiers raced past the competition to place third in the
nation. A member of the Mideast Conference, Clarkson's team had entered five meets in the
winter. In the Nordic (cross country) events all five Clarkson skiers placed within the top 10 at
four of the five meets. The Alpine (downhill) team was not quite so dominating, but
consistently placed behind Syracuse University in the meets they traveled to.
Both teams, however, received bids to the National meet at Killington, becoming one of
only four bids issued to the combined regions of Mideast and Eastern Conferences. Despite
severe weather conditions of five degree temperature and 25 mph wind, the combined efforts of
all 10 skiers led the team to a national third-place finish behind the College of Idaho and
Brigham Young University; Sierra College took fourth.
Swimmer to Nationals.
Anne Donato became the first Golden Knight swimmer to qualify for
national championships. She swam the 400 Meter Individual Medley event in the NCAA
Division III swimming and diving championships held at Kenyon College, Oh., in the middle of
March. She had earned that berth by posting a state record time of 4:49.01 in the 400 Individual
Medley at the New York State Division III championships held in February at the University of
Rochester. She had been a Potsdam State student, but transferred to Clarkson in the fall to
major in Industrial Distribution.
Crystal Growth.
With financial support in excess of $2 million a year from NASA, industry,
and the states of New York, Massachusetts, and Florida, Clarkson formed the Center for the
Development of Commercial Crystal Growth in Space. Its primary goal was to use space to
grow crystals of higher perfection and larger size than is possible to grow on earth, and to
advance the technology of crystal growth on earth.
This Center was made up of a consortium of eight universities, 11 corporations, and two
national laboratories. Clarkson and the University of Florida concentrated on solidification of
cadmium telluride and gallium arsenide for such uses as high-speed and radiation-hard
integrated circuits, microwave devices, and infrared sensors. Other universities involved
included Alabama A&M, RPI, and WPI.
