Closely associated with electrical engineering, computer engineering also relies heavily
on computer science and mathematics. Many of the new computer engineering courses are
taken as electives by EE majors.
Soccer.
Led by tri-captains Dan Gasbarre '88, Vern Meyers '88, and Bill Hewes '88, the Golden
Knights completed the 1987 season with a 9-4-3 overall record and advanced to the ECAC
Upstate New York Regional play-offs. Defeating the University of Rochester 2-1 in the first
round of the playoffs, Clarkson lost to Alfred 1-0 in the championship game on the road.
Gasbarre set University records for most goals (43) and points (97) in a career, breaking
the old marks set by Mark Bissonette '80, and was named to All-ICAC and All-New York State
teams for the fourth straight year.
Women Basketballers.
An ECAC championship title, a second-place finish in the New York
State Tournament, its first ever season with well over 20 wins, two regular season tournament
championship trophies, and a 10-game winning streak made the 1987-88 season the best ever
for the women's basketball team. Head coach Brian Chafin's team, which won 12 of its last 13
games, finished the season with a 27-4 overall record, and a 23-3 NCAA Division III mark.
Melissa Smith '90 led the Clarkson squad, averaging 15.2 goals and 7.4 rebounds per game. Her
selection to the New York State All-Tournament team highlighted a season filled with
individual honors.
SPECTRUMM.
Founded by Clarkson students, this social organization had as its goal the
interrelationship of both minority and majority students as they faced social problems like
racism, and worked on solutions for those problems on campus. It chose as its name the
acronym SPECTRUMM which stood for Students Proposing to Engineer Cultural and
Thorough Relations Uniting the Minority and Majority.
In its early months, it was highly active on campus. It placed second in the Phonathon,
held a Halloween party for the local Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization, had a member
sing at President Gallagher's inauguration, held a talent show at the Ogdensburg Correctional
Facility in conjunction with the Associated Colleges, and sponsored a celebration of Black
History month.
Real Clarkson Family.
Little did Alexander Hamilton II realize when he graduated as a civil
engineer from Clarkson in 1953 that he would father a Real Clarkson Family. Five of his six
children followed in their father's footsteps at Clarkson. Alexander III graduated in Industrial
Distribution in 1981; Scott in Management and Marketing in 1983; Kimberly in Computer-
Based Management Systems in 1986 (her husband, Mark Bottini graduated in 1985); and the
twins Keith A. and Kevin A. in 1988 in Industrial Distribution. No other alumnus has had so
many of his family graduate from Clarkson. After another sister, Deborah, graduated from
Syracuse, the twins declared that such an anomaly will be prevented in the next generation!
This family record almost tops that of the Norman Myers family; six of their eight sons
studied at Clarkson, but only five graduated: Frank '65, Jerry '67, John '71, Edward '75, and
Michael '81. A sixth son, William, studied here between 1975 and 1978, but did not graduate.
"Safer Sex Kits." In spring, both the Counseling Center and Student Health Center began
distributing "Safer Sex Kits" to students who requested them. These kits contained condoms
