Hockey.
At the championship round of the Syracuse Invitational Hockey Tournament on
December 29 and 30, Clarkson defeated Colgate 5-4 in a slugfest which lasted into two
overtime periods. Luciano Borsato was named as All-American. Goalie John Fletcher was
named ECAC Rookie of the Year, and Jeff Korchinski, Luciano Borsato, and Steve Williams
were given honorable mention as ECAC All-Stars.
Student Contributions.
The Class of 1987 continued the Senior Class tradition of contributing
toward the Student Center. Over 650 seniors donated $14,500 toward the project.
Ice Carnival Events.
Between January 26 and February 7, Ice Carnival 1987 featured a large
number of events. Centered around its theme: Fantasy, the Carnival contained the Cavalcade
skits, ice sculptures, a parade of floats, King and Queen contest, oil cloth paintings, sports
events, and the Ice Carnival Ball held at State's Multipurpose Room. Among the sports events
were volleyball, broomball, tricycle relay races, cross-country skiing, a tug-of-war, and a pie-
eating contest.
Literary Magazine.
Resuscitating an idea last seen on the Clarkson campus 20 years earlier,
Robert Beadle, Lorelei Ackerman, and Chris Campo began
Looking Glass
, a literary magazine
for Clarkson's creative efforts. (See p. 445) Accepting fiction, poetry, and artwork, this
production called for the efforts of quite a handful of people needed for layout expertise,
business skills, budgeting abilities, and so on.
Looking Glass
appeared only once during this
first year of publication, but over the next few years, it appeared semesterly.
Soccer Record.
Finishing the season with its best record in three years with 10 wins, five
losses, and three ties, the Clarkson soccer team was invited to the sectional playoff against the
University of Rochester. Senior Dan Gasbarre scored the "miraculous" unassisted winning goal
which then sent Clarkson to face Alfred in the second round. Scoreless until the last eight
minutes, that game went to Alfred, 1-0, when Alfred put in a corner goal against the best efforts
of goalkeeper Jim Stathopoulos.
Women's Tennis.
Under the able tri-captaincy of Sue Berardi, Kelly Ryan, and Elizabeth
Fouracre, the women's tennis team compiled a 4-5 record. Losing to Potsdam 8-1 to begin the
season, the Lady Knights then defeated Trinity by the same score. A loss to Plattsburgh 5-3 was
followed by a win over Oswego 6-3. Clarkson then lost to Potsdam State 8-1 again, but turned
around and defeated Russell Sage 7-2, before losing two matches to RPI and SLU. They won
their final match of the season by defeating St. Michael's 7-2.
Lt. Col. Boyd Killed.
Air Force Lt. Col. Michael L. Boyd was killed in a crash at Travis Air
Force Base, California, on April 8 when the left wing of the L-100 transport plane he was flying
hit the runway on landing. The plane burst into flames killing all seven men aboard.
He had come to Clarkson in June 1985 as commander of Clarkson's Air Force ROTC
Detachment. In his memory, a sandstone plaque was mounted near the American flagpole in
front of Snell Hall.
