participated in this endeavor to help offset tuition increases by contributions to Clarkson's
scholarship funds.
Canadian-US Business.
The international symposium titled
Trade and Technology: Economic
Opportunities with Freer Trade,
which was a highlight of President Gallagher's inauguration,
marked the debut of its sponsor, the Center for Canadian-US Business Studies.
This Center sought to increase understanding of Canada-US business relations through
educational and research activities. Directed by economics professor Frederic Menz, it drew
upon both the expertise of the School of Management's faculty and Clarkson's proximity to the
Canadian border. Clarkson's MBA program also integrated studies pertaining to the business
environments of both countries based on the initiative created by funding from the Canadian
government.
Accreditation Reaffirmed.
Every accrediting agency appropriate to Clarkson's mission
awarded the University a reaffirmation of its accreditation. The Middle States Association of
Colleges and Universities, responsible for reviewing accreditation at the institutional level, sent
a team to campus in May 1987. Its chairman, Peter Likins, president of Lehigh University,
noted:
Clarkson University is a fine institution, with unusually good people at all levels
devoted to their shared enterprise.
The American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the
Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) also sent teams to campus.
AACSB renewed Clarkson's accreditation, a recognition achieved by only 250 of the 1,200
programs reviewed by that agency, and ABET reviewed and approved accreditation of the
mechanical engineering program.
Class of 1992.
Seventy-three percent of the students entering as the Class of '92 graduated in
the top 20 percent of their high school class, and 46 were valedictorians or salutatorians. Their
average SAT scores were 620 (math) and 515 (verbal). Twenty-nine were sons or daughters of
alumni, and one-fifth were women. These newcomers arrived from 20 states, including
California, Texas, and Mississippi, and 14 countries.
Most Degrees.
Association of Engineering Colleges of New York State revealed that in the
four main branches of engineering- chemical, civil, electrical, and mechanicaláPClarkson once
again awarded more bachelor's degrees than any other college in New York State. In the
Northeast, Clarkson granted the third largest number, according to the Engineering Manpower
Commission, with Penn State, and Northeastern ranking number one and two, respectively.
New Hockey Tradition.
To delighted alumni of both schools in 25 cities, the Clarkson-St.
Lawrence hockey game was telecast from Appleton Arena in Canton on January 16, 1988.
Connected by satellite, the game reached alumni in places like Atlanta, Los Angeles,
Washington, Chicago, New York, and Seattle. The alumni affairs staff of both universities
collaborated in producing this closed-circuit live satellite broadcast, the first such broadcast of a
collegiate hockey game.
